This was a housead for the series, if memory serves. Inks by Jesus Merino, Colors by Guy Major, and a Script by David Goyer and Geoff Johns.

It’s a 90 page one shot book about the JLA and the JSA teaming up to fight a couple of big bad baddies. It is an old school super team team-up book that is about as pretty as it gets, and the story is a lot of fun. Go buy a copy of it. I re-read my copy this afternoon, after thinking about the book while I was working.

I love Virtue and Vice so much! This is Geoff Johns at his absolute best! Balancing so many characters and giving most a chance to shine. This is one of the shining examples of something that can be done in the DCU and not in the Marvel Universe and Johns takes full advantage of it. Carlos Pacheco and Jesus Merino are an amazing art team and I think they always need to work together. Separately they are very talented, together they are among the best. I’m going to have e give this another read. It’s been about a year since I’ve read it. Still one of my favorite DC stories.

  • Have you met any comic writers or artists?

In real life I met Becky Cloonan, Michael Kupperman and Daniel Cloves.  As part of the Attilan Rising Podcast I got to Skype interview James Asmus, Al Ewing, Saladin Ahmed, Devin Grayson, Brandon Montclare, Christian Ward, Geoffrey Thorne, Amy Reeder and Daniel Kibblesmith.  And I’ve had email correspondences with Kelly Sue DeConnick, Jen Van Meter and Matt Fraction.

Without exception they have each been absolutely cordial, sweat and all around super cool.   They say ‘never meet your heroes, you’ll only be disappointed’  …yet in this instance that saying doesn’t apply in the least.

Bendis is cordial, but usually busy. He’ll sign your stuff and answer a few quick questions.

Claremont is kinda prickly in person.

Keith Giffen is amazing. He will make you giggle your ass off. Meet him. Seriously. He is hilarious.

    MEET STERANKO. PLEASE.

Ethan Van Sciver is a dick on Twitter and Online. In person? He’s great. He’s super friendly and will talk about any of his projects. Dude straight up gave me a full page Kilowog pinup. He’s supercool in person, and I was bummed when I kept hearing about his dickery online.

Jhonen Vasquez is a jerk. Straight up. His negative rep with fans is earned. I watched him do everything but drop trow while talking to the 13 year old goth chick in a plaid skirt in front of me. People that like his work will defend him. I used to like his work, then I met him. Put it that way.

Simone Bianchi is very, very nice. He had a spiderweb shaved into his head and did a wolvie headsketch for me on one of my books.

Frank Cho is super chill. He’s got a long list of commissions and people wanting sketches, so don’t expect a freebie or even hope for one, but he’s awesome in person.

McNiven is very, very cool. Remembers pages, will remember your face. Nice guy.

John Romita, Jr. is the best guy I’ve ever met at a convention. He is an industry legend and he is the nicest, most down to earth guy you’ll meet. Personable, friendly, and he’ll remember you if you meet him more than once.

Walt and Louise Simonson are a treat. Walk up to their table in artist alley. Great stories, friendly, nice people.

Jim Lee is very, very cool and calm in person. He’ll have the longest line at the convention, and it will take forever to see him because he takes the time to talk with everyone. Nice guy, super friendly.

Andy Kubert bought ME a beer in the hotel lobby at the WWPA, and we sat and talked about Tarzan, Tor, his Dad, and his work on Batman.

Adam not only signed my books, he flipped through them and told me behind the scenes stuff about specific pages. (Both Kuberts are awesome in person).

Grant Morrison is very, very interesting in person. He has legions of droogs following him around, and when you meet him in person you’ll be like “oh, gotcha”. He’s nice, and he’ll listen to your questions and answer you clearly.

Bendis is fantastic both in person and online. Generous and nice.

Mark Millar is a riot and has fantastic convention stories. If you ever get a chance, ask him to tell the story about pouring tequila in his eyes.

Dan Slott was great to meet in person. He did a sketch in my sketchbook and told me and group around about his plans for The Thing if Marvel hadn’t canceled the series. It sounded amazing.

The Allred’s are the sweetest people. They were down to talk about whatever and were sharing snacks with people in line to meet them at conventions.

Joe Quesada is just cool. We chatted about football at C2E2 one year. Great guy.

Michael Turner was every bit of all the great things you’ve heard about him. Despite how big his lines were (and they were huge) he took time to talk to everyone. He gave me and a friend quick headbust sketches free of charge.

Rob Liefeld is great in person. You can tell he’s a huge fan of comics and he’s great to talk comics with.

The Wonder Comics line from DC Comics is such a breath of fresh air in mainstream comics. Every book and every creative team has such an amazing energy. Bendis took the spirit of Ultimate Spider-Man and turned into a line of fantastic comics. I cannot recommend all 4 comics from this line enough. Big two comics needed something like this in the worst way.

  • They've announced a 2 part Long Halloween animated movie

That’s what we seem to be hearing, and that’s fine with me, I suppose. It’s terribly overrated but still quite good as I recall, and hopefully they’d have more luck adapting Sale’s style than Quitely’s.

I’ve been waiting for a Long Halloween movie for years! I actually doubted it would ever happen because Jeph Loeb is a big muckity-muck for Marvel’s Animation Department. But this is really good news.

By the way, I don’t think the story is overrated at all, but whatever. To my thinking, Long Halloween is one of the best Batman books of its time, if not all time.

    Agreed! A definitive Batman story.

What a great article! Had a bunch of info on Mask Of The Phantasm I didn’t know! Mark Hamill’s experience watching the movie on the theatre is such a good story. Give it a read!
